Trump issues a sharp criticism of European countries, Ahead of his meeting with Rutte

U.S. President Donald Trump has accused several European allies of failing to support the United States during its confrontation with Iran, ahead of NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte’s visit to Washington.

Speaking at the White House, Trump said the United States has spent vast sums over the years helping to protect Europe, yet key allies did not stand with Washington when it requested support during the conflict with Iran.

He specifically named the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy, saying: “We asked them to come, and they were not there for us.” Trump did not provide details about the type of support the United States had sought.

U.S. officials have repeatedly criticized NATO allies for what they describe as insufficient support during the war with Iran.

Trump also appeared to question the future U.S. security commitments to Europe, saying Washington spends “hundreds of millions of dollars annually” helping protect European countries from Russia, and suggesting that the United States may be less willing to assist allies in the future if they are not prepared to offer support in “small matters.”

Rutte is expected to visit Washington from Tuesday to Thursday, with his schedule including a meeting with Trump at the White House, as well as talks with other senior U.S. officials.
