The Blue Memory : Alexandria Celebrates Its Maritime Heritage in the Presence of Professor Dr. Emad Khalil

Thursday, September 10: The Honorary Italian Consulate Hosts a Seminar with the Participation of a Distinguished Group of Those Interested in Culture, Archaeology, Heritage, and the Seas

Alexandria continues its celebration of the World Day for Underwater Cultural Heritage through a cultural seminar entitled “The Blue Memory in Egypt’s Maritime Heritage,” to be held at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 10, at the Italian Consulate in Alexandria, located at Saad Zaghloul Square in the Ramleh Station area.

The seminar is hosted by the Honorary Italian Consulate in Alexandria, through the Honorary Consul of Italy, Signor Mario Di Pasquale, in cooperation with the Rotary Lighthouse Alexandria Club. Professor Dr. Emad Khalil, UNESCO Chairholder for Underwater Cultural Heritage at Alexandria University and Vice President of Misr University for Science and Technology, will be the guest of the seminar, speaking about Egypt’s maritime heritage and the importance of preserving submerged cultural heritage.

The seminar will be presented by Mr. Ahmed Bassiouni, in the presence of a distinguished group of people interested in the fields of culture, heritage, archaeology, and the seas, in a meeting that opens the door for dialogue on the importance of maritime and underwater heritage and its role in reading history and learning about the civilizations that flourished along the Mediterranean coast.

The seminar will address the value of underwater cultural heritage as an integral part of Egypt’s historical and civilizational memory, with a focus on the unique character of the city of Alexandria, whose history has been closely connected to the Mediterranean Sea. For many centuries, Alexandria was a meeting point for civilizations and cultures, leaving behind a maritime legacy and submerged archaeological remains that represent important pages in the history of humanity.

The seminar will also highlight the importance of documenting, protecting, and preserving this heritage, as well as raising awareness of its scientific, cultural, and historical value, thereby contributing to safeguarding Egypt’s maritime memory and making it accessible to future generations.

This event comes as an affirmation of the importance of cooperation among cultural, academic, and community institutions in introducing underwater cultural heritage and highlighting the prominent position enjoyed by Alexandria as one of the most important Mediterranean cities, embracing a rich maritime and civilizational memory.
