Burkina Faso Ends Relations with Paris: What Are the Reasons Behind the Sudden Decision

International relations in West Africa have undergone a dramatic shift after Burkina Faso officially announced the immediate severance of its diplomatic relations with France.

This decision represents the culmination of years of escalating tensions between the capital, Ouagadougou, and Paris, the country’s former colonial power and principal security partner until the military coup in 2022.

The move further deepens the rift between the two sides and raises widespread questions about the future implications for the French embassy there and the safety of foreign nationals.

According to the ruling military council in Burkina Faso, the direct and official reasons behind the decision are accusations that France has adopted new and overt colonial ambitions in the region.

The military authorities also accused Paris, according to the Pharos Center for African Studies, of actively supporting subversive and terrorist networks targeting the country’s stability, although the military council has not yet presented public evidence to substantiate these allegations.

For his part, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Communications, Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo, explained the political background of the decision, stating that the fundamental conditions for strengthening relations based on mutual respect, mutual trust, and respect for the principle of non-interference in internal affairs and national sovereignty no longer exist between the two countries.

This step comes as an extension of a series of hostile measures previously taken by the military government against foreign diplomats. In 2023, France was asked to recall its ambassador, and the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs was expelled. This was followed in 2024 by the expulsion of three French diplomats on charges of engaging in subversive activities.

In response, France expressed deep regret. French Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pascal Confavreux described the decision as hostile and unjustified, reflecting a troubling direction by the authorities in Burkina Faso. He confirmed that Paris is currently considering the necessary reciprocal measures while urging French citizens there to exercise the utmost caution in light of the country’s complex security situation resulting from its fight against extremist groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and ISIS.
